The foundation of Daisy & Iris Unique Poi Creations

The name Daisy & Iris was Inspired by my two beautifull daughters. My eldest Joy-Daisy Ngaraka who is named after her great grandmothers. And In between, my son Ashly-James Te Ahikaiata who is named after his great grandfathers. And lastly, my youngest daughter Iris-Jade Aniwaniwa who is our baby of the family and is named after the Iris flower, the jade green stone and the rainbow..We are a creative bunch with big creative minds still learning and finding our shine in the world. Opening a Poi, Craft or Wellbeing business was always something I had wanted to do for a very long time, especially when my children came into this world and joined me on my journey. Back then, Daisy's Unique Poi was the original name I would go with. And after baby Iris, me and my eldest daughter decided to extend our business name and go with Daisy & Iris Unique Poi Creations instead. And well, it fit perfectly like two peas in a pod๐Ÿ˜ Who am I? My name is Danielle Hiraina Wharepapa and I am Mother and Creator of Daisy & Iris Unique Poi Creations. Why Poi?

My family are Maori. Born and raised in the Eastern Bay of Plenty of New Zealand, in a little ole town called Kawerau. I spent majority of my years growing up between here and Australia and my creative passion for poi making first started as a hobbie back in 2015 while I was living and working in Sydney.

Past. when I was kid I use travel around with my Koro and his haka group, Tuhoe ki Kawerau. and at times I would sit quietly and watch our Nanny Kura McClutchie make Poi for the haka team for the Tuhoe Ahurei. It was always fascinating to watch and I even got my first pair of poi from her back then I was so proud I took them to school with me and ended up performing with them in our primary school kapa haka๐Ÿฅฐ

Fast forward to the Present. Poi making is one of those pratices that has become second nature to me and I enjoy it a lot.

The Poi I make are not professional standard like the Poi you will see on Te Matatini stage, however I do create them for the same purposes and they last a lengthy period of time after use.
